Prenatal & Postpartum
FAQ’S:
What is your training in giving acupuncture during pregnancy?
Although I’ve been treating pregnant patients for over 13 years, I have also completed 4 years of specialized training through an intensive mentorship in perinatal care (MAMPS) with internationally recognized experts in the field. I am well versed in providing acupuncture during pregnancy with a high level of safety and experience. Additionally I am a member of the Obstetrical Acupuncture Association (OBAA).
Is it safe?
The research on the safety of acupuncture during pregnancy is quite conclusive. When administered by a Licensed Acupuncturist, it is safe to have acupuncture at any point during pregnancy. Women benefit greatly and the research shows that regardless of which trimester you are in, there is no increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes.
A few issues acupuncture may help with:
- Nausea/Vomiting (“Morning Sickness”) and Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG)
- Aches and Pains (lower back and pelvic girdle, neck and shoulder, mid-back, knees, pubis symphysis dysfunction, carpal tunnel)
- Digestion: Heartburn, Constipation, Hemorrhoids
- Anxiety and Depression
- Insomnia
- Sinus Congestion, Sinus Headaches and Nosebleeds
- Headaches and Migraines
- Itching
- Edema (swelling)
How often will I have treatments?
It depends on the issue and the severity. Most pregnant people come weekly during the first trimester (there are more discomforts during this time), every 2-4 weeks during the 2nd trimester (usually feeling your best) and then increase again to once or twice per week during the 3rd trimester (symptoms like back or pelvic pain, digestive problems start to increase and in the last month we work on preparing your body for birth).
What is a typical treatment like?
During the 1st trimester you can lie on your back, then once you are no longer comfortable in this position you can have acupuncture while lying on your side or lying propped up on a large wedge pillow. At the start of the session we’ll discuss your symptoms and any changes since the last visit, and I will then perform the acupuncture treatment. Additional modalities are often beneficial, and can include cupping, gua sha, moxibustion or herbal liniments for muscle soreness.
Home visits
I am happy to offer home visits at any point during pregnancy. It’s easiest to lie on your bed or couch during the treatment and I will bring all the supplies! **Home visits available within Manhattan below 110th St or areas of Brooklyn, Queens and NJ within 30 minutes of Union Square by car or public transportation.
